I haven't set foot into the ID debate for a while, but when last I checked a strong response to the "tuned constants" argument was the "anthropic principle", which basically meant that since we're here then of course we could find the fundamental constants (ignoring your point about the suspect acorrelation presumed to those constants for a moment) perfectly suited to our needs, since if they weren't there would be no scientists to fret about it. <BR/><BR/>The "tuned constants" argument is thus analogous to considering the phenomenal improbability of one's own birth (your parents meeting, the right sex cells meeting, etc.) and then imagining that all of history must have been designed to suit that event.
