When we're separated, we tend to focus upon negative differences rather than common positive aspects... hence the blame game, hence the vicious circle of "divide and conquer." Of course the latter should not be elevated to an unquestionable maxim because important theological issues remain. My sense (for what it's worth) is that it's easier to peer into the underlying common understandings even in theologically-difficult issues if we don't succumb to the "divide and conquer."Holopupenkohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10453361987796262505noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10944560.post-67076265905953674732007-05-10T14:24:00.000-04:002007-05-10T14:24:00.000-04:00Certainly, Schaeffer had his blind spots, but I li...Certainly, Schaeffer had his blind spots, but I like to concentrate on his positive points: it's clear that he was a genuinely Godly man, and that he generally had a good instinct about the need for reason to govern our lives. An article in the latest issue of Touchstone mentions the role of his book in mobilizing Evangelicals against abortion.

I count his son's return to a Church with Apostolic succession a credit to the formation his father imparted. Schaeffer was unable to go there himself: as so often happens, those raised in a foreign land, like Moses, are unable to enter the Promised Land to which they have led their children.

LGLawrence Gagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01242322119143922513noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10944560.post-72875834153474215872007-05-10T07:24:00.000-04:002007-05-10T07:24:00.000-04:00LG: Excellent post an...LG:
Excellent post and observations! Because of our self-centeredness, “divide and conquer” is one of Satan’s easiest weapons to deploy. Schaeffer’s anti-Catholic baggage got the better of him… and not only regarding St. Thomas. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why his son, Frankie, became and Eastern Orthodox Christian.Holopupenkohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10453361987796262505noreply@blogger.com
